What We Learned in Our ‘Good Journeys’ Workshop
This week our pupils took part in a fantastic Active Journeys workshop all about travelling safely and responsibly to school. Through lively discussion, movement games and hands?on activities, the children explored what makes a journey safe, healthy and environmentally friendly.
The children learned:
??? What an active journey is
– Walking, cycling, scooting and any way of travelling that gets your body moving.
? How to spot dangers on the way to school
– From busy roads to cars parking on pavements, the children identified risks and talked about how these affect walkers, cyclists and even animals.
? Journeys to school around the world
– Pupils were fascinated to see how children in other countries travel. They compared these journeys with their own and reflected on what feels safe—or unsafe.
? How we can keep ourselves and our environment safe
– They discussed solutions like switching off car engines to reduce pollution, using zebra crossings, wearing high?vis clothing and planning safe routes.
?? Building Good and Bad Journeys
– Working in groups, the children designed and built model “good journeys” and “bad journeys” from home to school. This helped them think creatively about safe crossings, dedicated space for walking and cycling, and how to protect all road users.
? Key safety messages
– Be Bright, Be Seen
– Stop, Look, Listen, Wait, Walk
– Wear a helmet and stay visible
– Walk your bike or scooter across roads
The workshop encouraged the children to think deeply about their daily travel and how small changes can help create safer streets for everyone. They absolutely loved the activities and shared fantastic ideas for making our school community safer and greener.
