Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care at Strabane Controlled Primary School

Pastoral Care is at the heart of our school ethos, ensuring that every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Our commitment extends beyond academic achievement to encompass emotional wellbeing, inclusion, and personal development for pupils and staff alike.

Our Approach

We believe that a strong pastoral foundation creates a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn and grow. Through strategic planning and dedicated initiatives, we aim to promote resilience, empathy, and positive relationships across our school community.

Key Priorities

  • Health & Wellbeing: Annual events such as Health and Wellbeing Week and Anti-Bullying Week encourage pupils to explore self-awareness, emotional literacy, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Staff Development: Ongoing training in emotional health, safeguarding, and behaviour support ensures our team is equipped to meet the needs of every child.
  • Community Engagement: PTFA events, shared celebrations, and initiatives like Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day and Grandparents’ Coffee Mornings strengthen the bonds between school and home.
  • Physical Activity: From rugby and football to swimming and gardening, pupils enjoy diverse opportunities to stay active and develop lifelong healthy habits.

Highlights

  • Health & Wellbeing Week: Activities such as PD&MU lessons, art workshops, Internet Safety Day, and Feel Good Friday promote holistic wellbeing.
  • Roots of Empathy: We have a teacher trained as an instructor for this global programme, helping pupils build emotional intelligence and respect for others.
  • Staff Wellbeing: Initiatives like EA’s Art of Brilliance workshop, Being Well Doing Well and access to mental health resources reflect our commitment to supporting staff.

Impact

Our pastoral care strategies have contributed to improved pupil engagement and attendance, with rates rising steadily over recent years. Regular monitoring, feedback, and evaluation ensure that our provision remains responsive and effective.

At Strabane Controlled Primary School, pastoral care is more than a programme—it is a promise to nurture every individual, celebrate diversity, and create a community where everyone feels they belong.
